Here is a sharing moment: I have Attention Deficit Disorder. For me, ADD is both a blessing and a curse. Because of the ADD, I struggle with focusing on one task at a time. I tend to have four or five halfway completed projects on the go at any given moment, and this leaves me with a general sense of anxiety. One of the strategies I have adapted over the years to deal with that lack of focus and resulting anxiousness is to allow myself to just be in the moment.
What does that mean? For example, if I’m unloading the dishwasher I try not to think about what I’m going to do next. I try not to allow myself to get distracted, as I know I need to be present in the task at hand. This practice can benefit everyone. So many of us let our lives get so busy that we are continuously running from one thing to the next. Rarely do we give ourselves the time to simply slow down and reflect.
I have really tried in the last few months to allow myself moments to “just be.” Whether that means I take an extra long time getting ready or setting aside a few minutes to lie on the floor and meditate, these small adjustments help me switch my energy and re-center myself. The more we strain ourselves to be busy, the more disconnected we become from who we are and what we truly want out of life.
I encourage you to take some guilt-free “just be” moments in this next week, and to take notice of how you feel afterwards. I think you’ll find that quick connection with yourself rewarding and energizing.
The top 5 ways that I like to practice being present in the moment are:
- Do actions slowly and deliberately
- Set aside at least 10 minutes of every day for your “just be” time
- Stop worrying about the future and focus on the now
- Look people in the eyes and really listen to what they are saying
- Meditate
Share your “just be” moments with me, and everyone else! What kind of experiences have you found? Get connected!
